Jusuru's Giving Back Program
Asma Ishaq, President of Jusuru International, Inc. interviewed in the November 2010 issue of Natural Solutions magazine about Jusuru's recent Haiti relief efforts.

Giving Back
Giving Back to the Community is Part of Jusuru International’s Charter
Prior to forming Jusuru International, Asma Ishaq held a position as Vice President of Business Development at Give Something Back (GSB), a “Founding B Corporation,” devoted to benefiting the community as a byproduct of its growth as a profit-making company. The B Corporation concept entails giving back to the community a fraction of its own profits.
In 2009, Ishaq became President of Jusuru International, and immediately inaugurated the same policy of community giving that she had implemented at GSB. Indeed, she was instrumental in making the B Corporation principle a key part of Jusuru International’s corporate charter. Charity programs and other forms of giving back to the community are therefore an integral part of what Jusuru International is all about.
In January 2010, after a devastating earthquake hit Haiti, Jusuru International announced that the first in its ongoing series of community help projects would be to donate 36,000 bottles of water to the Haiti relief effort.

Anaheim-based Jusuru International, Inc. announced that the 36,000 bottles of water it had donated to survivors of the Haiti earthquake had at last been shipped. Jusuru had been trying to arrange this shipment since the early days following the January 12 disaster. The delay was due to the transportation bottleneck caused by the near-total breakdown of Haiti’s port and airport infrastructure as a result of the devastating earthquake. The bottled water — along with many products donated by other manufacturers — were temporarily embargoed until after the most urgently needed medical supplies and equipment had gotten through the transportation bottleneck.

“It was extremely frustrating,” says Asma Ishaq, President of Jusuru International, “to not be able to get the bottled water to Haiti for two months. The filtered water undergoes a patented oxygenation process before being bottled in our Anaheim plant. In the context of the Haiti disaster, the special oxygenation process is completely beside the point. The point is that we had 36,000 bottles of purified water on hand and ready to ship.
“The only consolation,” continues Ishaq, “is that the water is finally headed across the ‘troubled bridge’ to Haiti…and that it will still be needed 2–3 weeks from now, when it’s scheduled to arrive. Actually, we intend the bottled water to be just the first in a series of Haiti relief contributions, which will include human volunteers and other resources. As a matter of fact, I will be traveling there shortly to help distribute the bottles and to personally assess — on site — the most practical ways that Jusuru International can help over the long term. This follow-through is in keeping with our corporate charter as a so-called B Corporation, a company that commits a percentage of its profits to helping people in need. It’s in our corporate DNA, you might say — an outgrowth of my own experience in a variety of jobs in private industry but simultaneously working on behalf of community programs.”
